Here’s a true fact: stress affects the way we look. If only it weren’t so. Stress is our body’s natural response system to keep us alert and aware of possible danger – it’s the feeling of a quickening heartbeat and skin that’s tingly and flushed. Stress becomes problematic when our body experiences it without enough relief or relaxation in between. When we’re stressed, the body releases cortisol, aka “the stress hormone”, which increases sugars in the bloodstream and also takes your body’s energy and attention away from basic everyday functions like maintaining its healthy balance, so that you can be on high-alert. When the body is in stressful-situation-reaction-mode more often than it’s not, it can lead to issues like anxiety, sleep problems, weight gain and depression.
How does stress affect the skin? Since the body is so preoccupied with whatever it’s anxious about, it’s attention is diverted from its healthy skin balancing and healing habits. That means conditions like acne, eczema or psoriasis can worsen. Plus, when people are stressed, it’s easy to skimp on skincare and personal beauty-time, because it really feels like that is just not the priority right now. That neglect can worsen skin problems or lead to new ones.
