Every year since 1909, a national day for women has been observed in the United States. It began as simply National Womens Day, following a passionate rally in 1908 in which women marched in New York, flexing their influence to demand what they saw as fair: shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. Europe followed suit with an International Conference of Working Women in Copehnagen in 1910, when Clara Zetkin proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day – a Womens Day – to press for their demands.
114 short years later, were honored to celebrate what has now become a very international holiday indeed – its grown in scope and meaning, and is now a platform for social and governmental organizations that fight for womens advancement, equality and rights. In the countries Afghanistan, Belarus, Cambodia, Cuba, Eritrea, Laos, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam (and many more), its an official holiday, with gift-giving and celebratory traditions much like our own Mothers Day!
Here in the USA, all of March is Womens History Month, and the 8th is our special day to rally around womens accomplishments. But its also a day to pause to remember the struggles that women around the world face every day. There are still too many women in the world without access to education, to economic empowerment or a way to earn income for their families, to clean water, to family planning opportunities – even to the basic safety assurance that they dont face danger within their own homes or their neighborhood streets. There is still so much work to be done – and today is a day to focus our energy on where that works is needed.
In the spirit of supporting women and girls, were proud to partner with Every Mother Counts to celebrate International Womens Day – EWC is a nonprofit organization founded in 2010 by maternal health advocate Christy Turlington Burns that’s dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. Today only, were contributing 25% of our online sales to the organization. Feeling inspired? Be sure to use the code GIRLS at checkout, to ensure that your purchase supports their work.
Why does their work matter? According the organizations research, approximately 287,000 women die each year due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth (thats one woman more than every 2 minutes). As if this wasnt tragedy enough, 98% of those deaths are preventable. EWCs mission is to tackle that percentage, preventing un-needed deaths by funding and providing programs that link women to critical health services at the time when they need it most.
Did you know that pregnancy is a leading cause of death for girls aged 15 – 19 in the developing world? Or, that over 222 million women who would like to choose when they get pregnant dont have access to family planning? EWCs invaluable work strives to help in all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, from providing counseling and testing for HIV, STIs, cervical cancer and other conditions, to training birth attendants and providing transportation for women who need to reach a safe facility for check-ups and birth.
Were honored to support EWC and their live-saving, life-changing work today, because we agree – every mother does count, and every woman deserves access to a safe, healthy and empowered pregnancy and motherhood.
