According to Julia Roitfeld’s bio, she grew up in Paris surrounded by the finest in art and fashion, where she cultivated her own passions and artistic talents before bringing them back to New York City. She’s an accomplished artistic director, photographer and graphic designer. Now, she’s the voice behind Romy & the Bunnies, a site named after her own daughter, Romy Nicole, which serves as an inspiration hub for mothers who want a relevant site in which to read, shop and discover, while preserving style, femininity and beauty.
According to our little interview we conducted in honor of Mother’s Day, she’s as laid-back and elegant in real life as she seems via Romy & the Bunnies. We’re so excited to share with you a sneak peek into her life as a mother in NYC, to charming Romy Nicole!
What’s a moment from motherhood you’ll never forget?
The first time my daughter gave me a proper kiss and hug!
What keeps you feeling beautiful? (Interpret this any way you like!)
My daughter says “Wow, nice” when I leave the door for an event or a dinner, or watching her mimicking me applying my creams and make-up, looking so fascinated!
What’s one thing you’ve learned from being a mom?
That its not all about me anymore.
What’s your favorite beauty food?
Avocado, plus carrot, ginger, apple, celery and beet juices from One Lucky Duck.
What’s your favorite Tata Harper product and why?
The Regenerating Cleanser. First of all, the smell. It is also the only cleanser that doesn’t leave my skin terribly dry after using it.
How do you treat yourself?
My favorite way to treat myself, and the easiest (that is, when I have time) is to take a long hot bath after I put Romy to sleep. Nothing better than silence, candles, a bit of oil and sea salt in a hot tub.
What’s your favorite way to disconnect and spend time with your family?
I love the summer in the Hamptons. I avoid airport stress with a toddler, and just a couple hours drive from the city, I am surrounded with nature and the ocean. I just love spending time in the garden with Romy, rolling in the grass or walking on the beach with her. I am definitely very much looking forward to the month of August when I get to just disconnect completely.
Can you share a discovery that has led to finding more balance in your life?
I actually started working out much more since becoming a mother. Even though I am more busy, I still make the time for myself because I feel like I regenerate after each workout session. Whether its ballet at Ballet Beautiful, boxing at Will Space or spinning at Soul Cycle.
The best piece of advice you ever received?
To not be too hard on myself, and to take time off from mommy duty without feeling too guilty (advice from my mom!)
