Jamie Rosen, Beauty Director at Town & Country Magazine (oh, it’s your favorite magazine, too?!), is a woman we admire deeply and have been so lucky to get to know as we journey through the beauty industry together. A true New Yorker, Jamie is raising her little ones in the big apple while holding down a job that most of us would die for, and we’re honored to share with you a little slice of her motherhood.
Were curious about your world…tell us about your current state of mind.
Searching for quiet; usually racing.
What is one trait you love about yourself that your children have brought out in you?
I dont think these are traits, per se, but having kids brings a very palpable, rushing sense of joy and joyfulness to life, and a sharp focus to your priorities.
Who is your beauty muse?
With regard to motherhood, whats one thing that nobody talks about that you think is worthy of conversation?
There can never be enough of a conversation about how difficult and consuming breastfeeding is! Or at least it was for me, and I powered through longer with my first than I did my second.
Whats one thing that really made a difference in terms of your ability to continue working or maintaining your career while starting a family, for better or for worse?
My husband. I feel like we are partners in parenthood. Dads are balancing it all, too! Also having a nanny who allows us to walk out the door in the morning and feel that our kids are in the best possible hands is a luxury and a gift.
What are some beauty staples that you keep in your purse (aside from Sophie the Giraffe, of course)?
Concealer, concealer, concealer. And a little cream blush goes a long way. Basically anything that counteracts the effects of mornings that begin before 7 am.
Has your philosophy on beauty changed now that youre a mom? If it has, how so?
I have become more focused on taking care of my skin. We all start out in life with beautiful skin, it just takes a little more work to maintain it now! When I had my first son I had been wearing this tinted moisturizer I thought was really natural looking, then I noticed this glittering, shimmering stuff all over his head. So I definitely wear less makeup, for practical reasons, and I now know what products you can apply one-handed!
Which bedtime story do you most admire?
Little Fur Family by Margaret Wise Brown (aka the author of Goodnight Moon). There is something very odd and melodic and old-timey about it; it’s very transporting. I found it on my friend Catherine Hongs blog mrslittle.com, which is all about lesser-known childrens books.
Which superpower would you most like to have now that youre a mom?
To protect my family from illness.
What is your mom/mum/mommy motto?
Its a work in progress!
Favorite family meal to share?
Green smoothies (recipe below) and green chicken nuggets!
Kingston + Dashs Green Smoothie
2 cups water
10 cucumber slices
Large handful of kale
Small handful of mint
Juice of 1 lemon
2 dried figs
¼ tsp powdered ginger or small piece of fresh
Blend it all together!
What is your idea of a perfect weekday morning?
To wake up rested, head outside to the local park with my husband and two sons for scooting and iced coffee, and come back in time to put on an outfit that does not involve grabbing the two closest items to the door.
A personal trick you’ve learned that helps you lead the life you love
Life is long if youre lucky, and too short to do things you dont love.
Were so happy that you use Tata Harper Skincare – tell us about the products that you cant live without.
Tata has convinced me on the double cleanse, so I love using the Nourishing Oil Cleanser, then the Purifying Cleanser. Your skin feels so soft and clean afterwards, and because you dont put water on your face before applying the oil cleanser, its not as time consuming as it sounds. I also have a serious love affair with the Lip and Cheek Tints in Very Charming (see above on the cream blush!) and Very Sweet (a no-makeup-makeup shade that gives such a pretty sheen to skin).
