There are a lot of blogs out there, but one that we consistently return to (and are endlessly inspired and entertained by) is The Glitter Guide. The women behind this Blog do it all: report on fashion trends, dish out delicious-looking beverage and snack recipes, and keep you up to date on the latest and greatest in the beauty world. Taylor Sterling is the incredible woman who runs the whole show, as the Creative Director, and it’s been a joy to get to know her as we’ve worked on posts and stories together. Taylor’s a woman after our own heart, and we’re honored to share some of her motherhood story below, in honor of this special holiday. Get to know her below!
Were curious about your world…tell us about your current state of mind.
My current state is hectic. Running my own business and having a very busy little 16 month old takes up a lot of my time. I’m super grateful for both, but lately I look for things that slow things down and allow me to focus on relaxing. Things like reading my daughter a book, taking a hot bath, or walking by the ocean. I love these quite, peaceful moments that help balance my typically loud and busy lifestyle.
What is one trait you love about yourself that your children have brought out in you?
Endless discovery. I’m always looking to learn and explore new things, and my daughter helps bring that out in me. She even makes simple things that I no longer pay attention to seem fascinating. Like playing in the dirt or blowing bubbles.
Who is your beauty muse?
My late grandmother Evelyn. She was such a beautiful woman. Up until she passed she was having my mom help her color her hair her signature auburn hue. I always remember her hair color made her royal blue eyes really shine. She only wore white or black and she never let her skin see the sun. She had the most flawless skin because of it. I wish I used more sunscreen from an early age. It’s something I hope to instill in my daughter.
With regard to motherhood, whats one thing that nobody talks about that you think is worthy of conversation?
I think that more should be said about the healing process after giving birth. I knew very little about having an episiotmy before I gave birth to my daughter. I had to have a pretty decent cut, it was painful for a long time. No one really talks about all the yucky, painful stuff that you may have to deal with after. Maybe that’s because it would make you even more anxious about giving birth, and we really don’t need that. Still, I think it’s nice for us to be aware of how hard it can be to give birth and recover.
Whats one thing that really made a difference in terms of your ability to continue working or maintaining your career while starting a family, for better or for worse?
Well, I would say all working moms really struggle with the whole ‘balance’ thing. I think the idea of balance should be thrown out, it just doesn’t exist, and it creates a lot of guilt and pressure. I know I’ve really struggled with it. I use to be a major workaholic and would work on my business for the whole day if I could. Now that just isn’t an option. I get about 5 hours in a day if I’m lucky. I have to be okay with letting my inbox pile up, not getting back to people right away, or saying no to more projects. It’s hard for me, but I really don’t have a choice till my situation is different.
What are some beauty staples that you keep in your purse (aside from Sophie the Giraffe, of course)?
I can’t go without a mini tube of Aquaphor. That stuff is my go-to for everything (dry skin, burns, cuts, etc.). I also carry Nars Creamy Concealer and Tata Harper Lip and Cheek Tint (my favorite for when (I’m on-the-go).
Has your philosophy on beauty changed now that youre a mom? If it has, how so?
Yes, so much. I try to use natural products when I can. I never really paid much attention to all that before I got pregnant, and now it’s something I’m actively trying to get better at. I also want things that take minimal effort, but make me feel beautiful. I can’t spend forever getting ready anymore. I want to look effortless, not sleep deprived.
Which bedtime story do you most admire?
My friend gave me a copy of, “Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You” by Nancy Tillman. It’s such a beautiful story with lovely imagery. We read it before bed often. It’s really special.
Which superpower would you most like to have now that youre a mom? Oh my! So many. Probably the ability to be in multiple places at the same time so I could do more for everyone. That doesn’t sound all that cool, haha. It’s just practical. What is your mom/mum/mommy motto? “Be gentle on yourself, you’re doing the best you can.”
Favorite family meal to share?
This isn’t really a family meal, but a yummy salad we make a lot. It’s a Brussel Leaf and Baby Spinach Salad Sauté by Sprouted Kitchen. It’s easy and delicious. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/brussel-leaf-and-baby-spinach-saute-51120220
What is your idea of a perfect weekday morning?
Sleep in! That means till about 7:30 -8:00 am for us. Then we all lay around in bed, drink coffee, read, relax. Followed by a family breakfast of pancakes and eggs. If we’re really lucky we get to the farmer’s market or the beach before it’s the afternoon.
A personal trick you’ve learned that helps you lead the life you love
To know when you need to push the reset button (my friend used this phrase recently, it’s so true). If I’m feeling crabby and stressed, and I just know I need a “reset,” I tell my husband that I need some “me” time. Maybe I go workout, maybe I take a walk, or a bath. I just need to do something that is going to give me that clarity I need to feel recharged. When you acknowledge this and make the time for space, it’s really powerful for creating more happiness.
Were so happy that you use Tata Harper Skincare – tell us about the products that you cant live without.
I’m not lying when I say that Tata Harper products have changed my skin (I talk about it here). Currently I love the Boosted Contouring Serum, Replenishing Nutrient Complex, and the Repairative Moisturizer.
