Introducing Summer Sanders, one of the most charming, lovely and inspiring ladies in the health & beauty community we’ve come across in a long time. Summer represents so much of what we believe in: a real gung-ho attitude towards revolutionizing your life with health, but with a practical approach that’s all about feeling and looking better every day, via raw food. While personally I’ve never tried a raw diet, we were intrigued, and thought we’d ask her to share her philosophy and advice here on our blog. So, without further ado –
Tell us about your approach to choosing what products to use on your skin. Does your philosophy towards food affect your beauty shopping habits?
My philosophy toward food absolutely affects my beauty habits! My philosophy on skin care is simple, if I can’t pronounce it or eat it, it shouldn’t be on my skin.
What are the benefits to a raw and / or vegan diet that we should know about?
Every person is a unique body and therefore needs a unique approach to food/diet. I respect this and always treat my clients as complete individuals. The one thing that a raw food diet offers that is absolutely beneficial to everybody is the live enzymes. Another important factor is the alkalinity of raw and vegan food. Most Standard American Diets contain foods that are acidic and inflammatory to the body. Acid and inflammation are the leading causes of cancers and other degenerative diseases. Some other great benefits are anti-aging, clear skin, weight loss, hormonal balancing, and energy! I experienced all these things when I became raw.
What are two tips for pregnant women who want to have a nontoxic pregnancy but aren’t sure where to start?
I think first and foremost being aware of your diet. Limit processed foods, don’t use any artificial sweeteners, no coffee, use alternative sweeteners, and cut any non organic foods. These days there are so many wonderful alternatives! My advice when trying to get healthy is to shop the perimeter of the grocery store. Anything in a bag or box (usually the middle of the store) should be off limits. Try to make all your meals at home and use organic whenever possible. Pesticides and chemicals in food are linked to birth defects and premature birth.
Secondly, watch what you put on your skin, if you are taking the time and money to eat well, then it makes since to use products that go along with your food philosophy and efforts. Tata Harper’s products are perfect for pregnancy, they are non-toxic natural products that won’t compromise the health of you or your growing baby. I stay away from all chemicals, parabens and synthetic hormones.
What’s the best raw or vegan meal (shakes and juices definitely count) you’ve ever made – could you share the recipe?
I’m currently obsessed with Fall so my pumpkin smoothie has been making me really happy at the moment. The name is kind of deceiving because it actually has no pumpkin in it! A common trick in raw food is to use carrot or yams in place of pumpkin, only because pumpkin is so hard to process.
If there’s one food every woman should incorporate into her diet as much as possible to have luminous, healthy skin, what would it be?
This is a hard one! There are so many beauty foods that I suggest and eat regularly but my top choice would be greens. Fresh greens either juiced or raw. My favorites are cucumber, kale, bitters, spinach and chard.
Lastly, what’s one piece of advice you have for women who are looking to switch to a natural or raw lifestyle (especially considering that from the outside, it can look like a lot of work)?
My advice would be to have compassion for yourself, trying to change your diet is very hard. We are often addicted to foods whether we realize it or not, this makes it incredibly hard to ween ourselves. Being able to forgive yourself and not fall into guilt is very important. It’s helpful to have a partner or friend who is supporting you or doing the diet change with you! Find blogs that support healthy raw/vegan food, check out books, play with recipes! Make the transition fun! Raw food can seem very boring if you’ve never tried it, but the reality is that the food is made with fresh flavorful ingredients, once you start playing with recipes you’ll really be amazed!
I’m a busy lady! Most of my meals are made in the Vitamix! Blend and go. I always suggest that people wanting to go raw invest in a good high-powered blender.
