May your costumes be Instagrammable, your appetite for candy insatiable and your night full of unexpected spooks and surprises. Growing up, I was never that into Halloween… it always used to spring up and surprise me, and a few hours before trick-or-treating I’d be found frantically inventing a C-grade costume out of random items. For example, one year I was just a leaf bag. Yep – I put my body inside one of those giant tall leaf bags, cut leg holes, and that was that. Needless to say, not my strongest year. But I’ve improved since then, the costume list including Daisy Buchanan, the planet Mars, the Monopoly Man, a mounted deer head, and Mia Wallace (otherwise known as Uma in Pulp Fiction). It’s a list I’m growing proud of!
Let’s get on to today’s real list: the friday five.

1: Spooky stories that are actually really freaky because they’re real! Jezebel (one of my favorite sites) asked readers to respond to a post last week with the scariest stories they had… they received 2,000 entries! They picked the 10 scariest, and they’re here. Then, they picked 11 more, and they’re here, posted today. I read just a few and found myself on-the-edge; a loud noise had me jumping out of my seat. Read a few to get in the Halloween spirit!
2: Other-worldly.tumblr.com. This is a tumblr that is dedicated to strange and lovely words – scrolling through its pages is highly addicting. It’s amazing to not only see words in English that I’ve never heard of before, but to see words in other languages that describe concepts for which we have no English vocabulary. It’s a delightful site to peruse; take a look and let us know what your favorite word is. Mine is Sophrosyne. Orenda is pretty lovely too.

3: Tomgirl Juice Co. For all of you Burlington, VT residents, take notice of this new local juice company! As we’re entering the season of short, dark days, it can be difficult to stay motivated to keep your diet fresh and healthy – I don’t know about you but I veer towards breads, sweets and starches, even though that’s the exact opposite of what I know I need. So, when I discovered her colorful site, I was sold – then, I found her 3-day autumn cleanse, and mentally signed up right then and there. Doesn’t it look great? If you’re in the area, stop by! If you’re not, follow her on social media. She’s awesome.
4: Pour la Victoire, shoe and handbag designer (they have some beautiful stuff; I am obsessed with these shoes), reached out to us to have us get some footage of Tata’s life here in Vermont, so they could edit and create the absolutely charming video below, which is a really nice glimpse of Tata’s farm, home and office. It joins a few other films they have made here in their Video series. Watch below!
5: #ASKLENA by Lena Dunham. Have you noticed these videos bouncing around the internet yet? If not, give this one a watch, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll head immediately to Lena’s Youtube page where you’ll promptly watch 11 more in a row. In the little videos, Lena gives advice to fans who have written in with questions. It’s addicting, mainly because Lena’s candid, heartfelt and hilarious advice is the most honest thing I have ever heard, that didn’t come straight out of the mouth of a best friend on a couch on a Sunday evening. She’s open to discussing everything (sex, OCD, mental illness, friendship), and it’s so refreshing. On my to-do list? Dive into the copy of Not That Kind of Girl that I have waiting patiently for me on my bedside table.
