Its not often that I actually take time to think about my beauty or skincare habits, routine or products. Its sort of just a default; I have my routine, I stick to it, no fuss or hunting for new items to add to my shelves. That said, the occasion of this weeks Friday Distractions had me thinking about it, and realizing that there are definitely some reflections to be had, some lessons learned. Heres five of them.
1: Makeup always looks better when skin is freshly exfoliated. Without even realizing it, this became a basic beauty mantra of mine. Bright and early, I use the Regenerating Cleanser to buff away dead skin and oil built up over night, followed by the Rejuvenating Serum and Beautifying Face oil. Then, when its time for my Vapour Foundation and Lip and Cheek tint (daily staple: Very Sweet, for a wintery glow), they applies effortlessly onto skin thats velvet-soft, and looks like it’s part of the skin.
2: Konjac sponges make a huge difference. I now use one of these sponges every day, without fail, usually right before using a cleanser. Theyre made from vegetable fiber and have a delicate plush feeling, and have a subtle foaming effect (though theres definitely no detergents in there). They make my skin super-soft and minimize pores like no other. I highly recommend trying them!
3: Broken capillaries are really annoying. Im naturally fair, and Im a blusher. Im pretty sure that being prone to flushing at everything from mildly embarrassing or uncomfortable moments to simply being over-heated is a genetic thing, and Im unfortunate enough to be quite blushy indeed. Well, blushing continually floods blood vessels just underneath the surface layer of the skin, sometimes causing breakages or ruptures. I have broken capillaries just next to my eyes, and two spots on my cheeks, in about the spot that a classic beauty spot would go. Only, they don’t look like Marilyn Monroes; theyre bright red. What to do? Im thinking about LED Light therapy. Have you heard of any remedies you can recommend?
4: Natural scents matter. Once you begin using 100% naturally scented products, you cant go back. Candles, skincare and bath products that are scented with synthetic fragrance are now completely unappealing to me; I don’t understand how people can find them bearable. Im infinitely grateful for the naturally gorgeous and pleasant scents of my Tata Harper products (specifically of the Revitalizing Body Oil, Replenishing Nutrient Complex and Hydrating Floral Essence). Going slow as I cleanse and moisturize allows me to breathe deep, fully enjoying the soothing, uplifting and mood-managing benefits of these natural scents.
5: A bad day can be rinsed away… I find that when I’ve had a rough day, or my mood is less than sunny, rinsing off the day and starting with a fresh face (even if it’s 3pm) is like a second chance to wake up on the right side of the bed, and my mood almost always lifts. Maybe it’s the scents mentioned above, or the act of spending two or three minutes focusing on myself, but it works wonders. Give it a try – when your mood has turned south, head to the bathroom, rinse your face off and re-apply. Mmmm.
If you took five minutes to think about it, I’m sure you can find some interesting observations about and lessons from your skincare routine. Share them below!
