Its a long, dragging, weekday afternoon, and youve got that 2pm itch to pull out your phone and open up Instagram, to see what the worlds up to. Photos of cute winter outfits, of Paris, of guinea pigs, of moms accidental selfies and DIY crafts whiz by. Then, a photo of a fresh salad, glowing green and looking oh so healthy. Bingo! Dinner tonight. You screen grab the shot, and later at home, check in on the instagrammers blog to get the recipe, because you promised yourself, I will eat better in 2015!
Sound familiar? We all make promises to ourselves in the new year, mainly because the media is telling us (relentlessly) that this is the time of year to do so. Its okay if you didnt do the resolution thing this year – being happy with yourself as you are in the present is really an accomplishment that you should be proud of. But, lets say you did, and that you set a goal to eat better in 2015: well, then we have the list for you!
For me, Instagram is a place for me to stay connected with friends near and far, but its also a source of inspiration, especially with food. When setting goals for myself, it helps to have support coming at me from all angles, and often that means seeing beautiful pictures of things to cook or new groceries to grab. As an avid Instagrammer (not only personally, but also as the manager of our Social Media activity!), I feel like I have seen hundreds of food and nutrition-oriented Instagram accounts. Here are 10 of the best ones, my favorites to follow and my suggestions for you – click on that blue follow button for high quality photography, truly original and helpful recipe and nutrition guidance, and a generally positive vibe.
1: @NutritionStripped: McKel Hills vibe is clean, polished, and super-intensely-nutritious. Her recipes are wildly healthy, packed with an abundance of herbs and superfoods, and her photography is fresh and pretty. She has a great you-can-do-it attitude, and has new ideas for food and drink every day.
2: @CleanFoodDirtyCity: A New York City Girl who knows how to make healthy exciting, and visually beautiful. Every single post is a food shot – I wonder, what does this girl look like!? – and her smoothie bowls are impeccably crafted.
3: @DeliciouslyElla: Sweet potato cakes with tahini, avocado and sautéed spinach, anyone? Or, how about oatmeal with almond milk, honey, raisins, cinnamon, strawberries, bee pollen . you get the picture. This girl is a nutrition whiz, and she has a cookbook coming out very soon. Exciting!
4: @TheKitchn: A site, an Instagram, thats all about cooking healthfully at home. Lots of simple, very do-able recipes to be found here. I like their balanced approach to food, and their open-arm embrace of cookies and treats.
5: @HannahBronfman: Hannah Bs feed is a mixture of fitness, fashion, beauty, parties, beaches, etc but she knows whats up when it comes to eating well, and really enjoying food and cooking. Her home cooked meals always look creative but very easy, such as zucchini noodles with pesto, or pumpkin energy balls. Plus, she founded the Beautified App, and is very skin-conscious when it comes to her eats!
6: @MindBodyGreen: A digital mecca for healthy people. Their Instagram does not disappoint, with great ideas for recipes, but mostly its a good place to wrap your head around what a holistically healthy lifestyle really means: its about exercise, relaxation, down-time and happiness, too.
7: @LiveGreenHealthy: This feed is 100% food, borrowed from other Instagram feeds, so not only is it a good place to go if you are looking for some more Instagram foodies to follow (each post tags the original author of the recipe), but it is just recipe overload. Some of their most recent posts: Olive Oil Poached Eggs on Avocado and Braised Kale Toast (umm), Black Bean and Quinoa Veggie Burgers, and Banana Sushi. Your guess is as good as mine on that last one.
8: @SimpleGreenSmoothies: Have a blender? Not really sure where to begin? This feed is smoothies all-the-time, and there is a recipe included in the text of pretty much every photo, so you dont even need to click over to another page. Lots of surprising, inventive new recipes on here!
9: @OhSheGlows: This woman knows how to cook! Pesto-stuffed roasted mushrooms? Yes. Lots of great ideas on here, especially for creating wholesome dinner-type foods that would be great for serving up at a party for friends. Lots of vegan and gluten-free options, too.
10: @MyNewRoots: A very aesthetically pleasing feed (minimalist, clean photos) that remind you of how beautiful food can be. Her blog is gorgeous too, and full of helpful, informative posts on cooking and nutrition.
