One of today’s top beauty trends is contouring and highlighting, which tricks the eye and makes it literally look as though the skin is candle-lit from within, dramatizing cheekbones and giving you a from-the-pages-of-Elle look. Its gorgeous! However, you cant really compare a glow delivered by makeup to a glow delivered by, well, your own skin.
Here are five steps to glowing skin, the natural way.
1: Ditch soapy cleansers and stripping toners. Why? Detergents, soaps, alcohols suck the moisture out of your skin, leaving it parched and degrading your moisture barrier, which keeps skin-damaging pollutants and toxins out. Moisture is not only essential for maintaining a healthy, plump environment for your collagen fibers (i.e., fewer wrinkles), but it ensures radiance by re-aligning the cells in your skin in a way that literally reflects light, giving it that glow. The last thing you want to do is use a product every day that pulls the moisture from your skin.
2: Opt for a cleanser that promotes + reinforces hydration. Oil cleansers, such as our Nourishing Oil Cleanser, are great for this; they thoroughly cleanse the skin and balance oil production without disrupting your skins moisture barrier. Look for cleansers that use essential oils, clays, enzymes and plant extracts like our Purifying, Regenerating and Refreshing cleansers. All three leave the skin beautifully clean, fresh and hydrated.
3: Invest in a serious Hyaluronic Acid-powered moisturizer. Moisturized skin cells are poised to reflect light, whereas dry, dull skin cells actually scatter light, giving the skin a flat look. Hyaluronic Acid is a high-performance moisturizing ingredient, and reinforces the skins natural production of the substance, to ensure long-term hydration. Check out our Hydrating Floral Essence, which is practically HA in-a-bottle.
4: Stay on top of exfoliation + regeneration. Tata recommends exfoliating every day. Why? The skin is an organ, renewing itself daily, and producing dead skin cells daily, too. Those dead skin cells are generally not good to have sticking around: they mix with sebum and oxidize to form blackheads, and they accumulate to give the skin that dull, dry look and rough texture. Use a cleanser that exfoliates daily, to slough away that buildup, gently revealing the fresh, new and healthy cells beneath. (Definitely dont over-do it; we don’t recommend using a serious exfoliator like the Clarisonic daily, but rather a gentle cleanser like our Regenerating Cleanser). Mask at least once a week with a beta-hydroxy treatment, like our Resurfacing Mask, and by nourish the skin with a multivitamin treatment, like our Replenishing Nutrient Complex.
5: Yes for sleep and water, No for smoking and coffee. During sleep, our skin goes into regeneration mode, allowing reparative hormonal activities that keep it fresh, oxygenated and nourished. Those hours are essential for maintaining skins radiance. Meanwhile – this is an obvious one – make sure to guzzle generous H20 to keep cells plumped from within. Avoid smoking, which reduces oxygenation and therefore nourishment to the skin, and excess amounts of coffee, which dehydrates the body.
