Until a few years ago, when I began working at Tata Harper Skincare, I had no idea what essential oils or aromatherapy were. To me, they were expensive little dark glass bottles in the grocery store that had words like calming or energizing on the bottle. It all seemed a little mysterious to me, and I never bothered to look into it.
Enter: Jon. Jon works on our team at THS as a Manufacturing Associate; hes in our lab every day, creating the skincare products you love with the rest of our team. He helps produce our aromatherapy blends, too. Jon is an essential oil freak, and I say that with the maximum amount of admiration and enthusiasm. He is an expert on essential oils and aromatherapy, and has spent years honing his skills with a variety of books, sessions with experts and certification courses, learning tons and tons about this subject he loves best.
I thought it might be a cool idea to extract some of the key facts about essential oils and aromatherapy from Jon’s mind to share with you all, because the truth is, essential oils are powerful, and their ability to change the health and overall balance of our health and minds is very real.
In fact, when youre finished reading this post, you might have some new ideas about how you can incorporate essential oils into your day to day life, to help you get closer to your own definition of happy / healthy / beautiful.
1: When shopping for Essential Oils, quality is very important. Lets just get started with some basic facts and definitions. Essential oils are super-concentrated liquids distilled from plants with steam (most often), and theyre used in everything from cleaning products to perfume to incense. Theyre essential in the sense that they contain the pure fragrance of the plant (or the part of the plant) that they are extracted from. Quality is important because on the market, essential oils are often cut with synthetic oils that can smell just the same as the pure natural version, and are thus diluted / cheapened. This matters because, according to Aromatic International, in order for essential oils to have a therapeutic effect we believe they must be pure plant extracts. Plus, Adulterated oils or perfume oils will not offer therapeutic effects and may in fact cause allergies, headaches and chemical sensitivities. Lets stick to the real deal, shall we?
How to tell if an essential oil is high quality? Look for 100% therapeutic Essential Oil on the packaging. To be super thorough, check for the GCMS Report, which identifies the components of your essential oil and calls out any synthetics.
2: They pass directly through our skin into our bloodstream, thanks to their very low molecular weight. That means that within seconds, theyre spreading through our bodies and passing through our liver, kidneys, lungs and heart. This is a good thing – their effects on your bodys physiology is immediate! Each oil does something different, and its important to do your research and know what your selected oil is going to do. Generally, though, theyre all miraculously therapeutic in one incredible way or another. For example, Rose essential oil can help reduce internal inflammation caused by infections, indigestion or dehydration. Plus, it helps purify and detoxify the blood by neutralizing toxins and free radicals with powerful antioxidant abilities.
3: Essential Oils vibrate at the highest known frequency on the planet. What?? I know that sounds new-agey, but let me explain: everything thats alive on this earth has a vibrational frequency, because were all made up of tons of atoms buzzing around at different speeds. A good way to think of the difference in frequencies is with food. Fresh, organic fruits and vegetables are high-frequency foods; theyre rich in energy from the sun and in potent vitamins and nutrients. In comparison, fast food or processed food has lost that energy, and are low-frequency foods. The lowest frequency food item on the planet? Canned foods. 0 life. Essential oils have the highest vibrational frequency of all, and Rose Essential Oil has the highest of all EOs. In that environment – within the pure oil – theres no room for bacteria, pathogens, viruses, etc. Thats why theyre so powerfully purifying and healing for our bodies.
4: You can tell what part of the plant the EO came from depending on the qualities of its scent. For example: Essential Oils that are extracted from the roots of plants (Vetiver and Angelica Root essential oil, for example) are have a deep, grounding, smoky scent, and in turn, their emotional and physiological benefits are deep and grounding as well. They help us feel solid, centered, and in control. Compare that to the scents of essential oils from flowers: these are almost always intense, colorful and strong scents, but theyre aways brighter than oils extracted from the root or base of the plant. The brightest of all are the citrus scents: Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon. These are from the fruit of the plant, hanging off a branch, at the furthest distance from the root. Theyre always zesty, sharp and bright – they lift our moods and fill us with energy.
5: There are dozens and dozens of ways to use Essential Oils to make life more wonderful. Here are a few ideas:
- Try an Aromatherapy Diffuser for your bedroom or office space. Depending on the mood you want to create, you can try different oils: lavender for relaxing, grapefruit for energizing, or jasmine for balancing.
- Mix 10-20 drops of your favorite Essential Oil with purified water in a spray bottle as an air freshener. We recommend lavender; shake well before each use.
- Dab a cotton ball with Lemon or Geranium Essential Oil and place into a smelly shoe to help neutralize the odor.
- To naturally scent your laundry, place 10 drops of Essential Oil onto an old washcloth or clean rag and place in the dryer before it runs.
- Put 5-8 drops of your favorite Essential Oil in your bath water before you soak. Try Chamomile, Lavender or Neroli for relaxing results.
- Try inhaling an energizing EO during your afternoon slump to reduce fatigue. Try peppermint or grapefruit for an instant lift.
- To help relieve tension headaches, massage a few drops of Lavender essential oil onto your temples or the base of the neck.
- For general home cleaning purposes, mix 1 cup vinegar, 2 cups of purified water and 10 drops of a purifying Essential Oil (Grapefruit or Lemon) to a spray bottle.
