I think its safe to say after the online shenanigans last week; we need to #FIXTHEINTERNET. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of what they think art is, though the definition of what constitutes forms of creative expression has certainly changed over time. Traditionally, technical skill and human agency has always played a part in the creation whereas the agent has some sort of direct awareness of their physical activity and the goals that the activity is aimed at realizing.
So I cant help but wonder, (1.) what was she thinking and, more important, (2.) why do we care? Im not raising a daughter (Id like to someday) but I have a niece and can recall how impressionable I was as a teenager. Look, it just made me upset to think of how many young women engaged with those photos and thought that this is one way (one extreme way) to go out in the world and arouse peoples interest because it was so celebrated and Im not sure if within the context of social media we celebrate other ways (ways that honor the highest expression of ourselves) with the same preeminence. Paper Magazine got over 5 million unique views for this spread.
Something I do love about social media is that we have a say in who were influenced by so were not all getting the same myopic viewpoints spoon-fed to us about what it means to be a beautiful, strong and celebrated woman. (It wasnt always like that, you know!) So good on you, the Internet is indeed broken. Even The Met responded to the Paper shoot! The Met! You know, the place where they keep the Caravaggios? Granted, it was pretty witty but the Internet is actually hemorrhaging and this is a feeble attempt to put a butterfly Band-Aid on it by redirecting attention and energy over to some all-around remarkable females that have something to say. They have an interesting point of view. They are candid, intelligent, honest, beautiful too. I gather that they are also conscientious of the ideas and stories they tell and take responsibility in the contribution they make to popular culture.
Heres list of 10 truly impressive women on social media that are worthy of a follow that will make you think, make you laugh and may even inspire you as they do for me. Please share your favorites in the comment section below and give this blog a share if you, too, believe in celebrating the real assets that are what make women unique and special.

Spoiler alert: there are going to be a lot of women in the beauty world on this list. Cant help it, we live in it. At the top of the list: the chicest. The queen. The one who seamlessly takes us behind the scenes at her job as the Beauty & Health Director at Teen VOGUE then into her Beyoncé dance class at the end of her day. Elaine Welteroth lives a really inspiring life and we love following her because a huge part of her job, like ours, is to get inside the minds of women–what is it about beauty that they are in to, what are they inspired by, what makes them feel confidentand shes very generous in sharing that with her audience. Elaine gives you up-to-the-minute beauty coverage and will introduce you to some really cool people, like Tata. Here they are making a DIY face mask last year at the Teen VOGUE offices.

Where do we start? Love of food? It emulates out of her carefully curated emoji sequences. Sense of humor? She needs her own show, Jerry. At-least take her for a ride for coffee sometime? Fashion? She knows whats in and what works, a self-proclaimed Net-A-Porter OG. I follow mostly for the laughs and cant help but enjoy her Zero BS tolerance for people being negative in her feed. She will call people out and theres camaraderie rallying behind this woman who always delivers her truth serum with such class and silliness. This is a lady who looks at life from a very charming point-of-view and clearly makes the decision daily to be positive and happy, which I think may very well be one of my favorite qualities a person can have. We could all benefit from a reminder to be that way.
3. @lotstar photo credit: Lottie Stannard & Darla Baker at Elite Models
Makeup artist Lottie Stannard of The Wall Group Agency is an incredible talent. I first met her on shoot in Los Angeles for a color story and an interesting thing happened. In a room full of talent who would pose in front of the camera, Lottie stole the show. Shes enigmatic, passionate about color theory and can do ANYTHING with her brushes. On her Instagram, youll find her traveling the world chronicling her adventures in editorial artist, making up some major actresses and sharing her favorite products. Oh, she has a stinkin cute Chihuahua too.
4. @Gab , photo credit: Gabriela Herman
Professional photographer. Part-time nudist. Brooklyn-based, curly haired beauty. Gabriela Herman is the coolest New Yorker we know and seeing the world from her lens is magical. Gab took a trek out to the farm in Vermont this past summer to shoot Tata and the Harper children. I dont know if she has a predefined color palette but her photos on Instagram all share common prevalent color theme that is unmistakably @Gab. Youll know it when you see it in your feed without even reading her name; yellowish or bluish/bleached bright/green or, more generally, saturated and greatly textured. Dream in color? Follow Gab!
Shameless plug: were biased here, obviously and enormously. There are some photos the team will share on Tatas Instagram feed but mostly its just Tata traveling the world and snapping pics of sharing natural and nontoxic skincare with women everywhere. When youre working for a busy beauty company thats growing as fast as Tata Harper, you cant always be involved in everything so we (I) love to follow Tata to experience all the things I dont get to see or do. Theres also the occasional random pic of the little ones that shell throw in there as well- so cute! Oh, and dinner with the Duchess of York. That was a cool one…
6. @molliechen , photo credit: Mollie Chen
Birchboxs editorial director knows beauty* (*and isn’t afraid to ask). But beauty isnt all that were after from this voracious sharer, shes also got great taste in food (understatement alert- girl is a total foodie), adventure, personal style pie even! If it sounds like there is a girl-next-door crush developing, its because there is. We had the pleasure of meeting Mollie a couple weeks ago at The Birchbox Speaker series in NYC after stalking her Instagram for so long and, as her photos would suggest, shes just really, really nice. And whats nicer than nice? Nothing really. Perhaps an adventurous spirit? Oh wait, she has that too! Check out her vacation photos she shared from a Yoga Retreat in Tulum. Loved them. Youre doing it right, Mollie.
7. @hilariabaldwin, photo credit: Hilaria Baldwin
Hilaria Baldwin reminds me to move. Being that she is a former student of NYCs Yoga to the People and a co-founder of Yoga Vida, I am completely drawn to her. I wrote about this in my last blog; that is, the importance of moving your body creatively throughout the day so that the mind can mirror the body and work in unison. Being more creative enhances our capability to problem solve, manage stress and come up with original ideas. Hilaria takes a hilarious approach with inspiring people to do just that by sharing a daily yogi pose daily- often in a clever and comedic setup.
8. @joythebaker , photo credit: Joy the Baker
Got a sweet tooth? Youll love what self-taught Joy the Baker is whippin up in her New Orleans kitch. Everything from candy bar cookies to cocktails to vanilla bean confetti cookies. She right in her caption, 9 out of 10 diets agree, I’m the WORST. but, let’s be real, we cant be juicing and eating kale all the time and when we do choose to indulge and enjoy the sweeter things in life, Joy offers up endless options.
9. @kellyweartsler photo credit: Kelly Wearstler
Designer Kelly Wearstler has a virtuosic talent for color and texture. Her raw but refined Hollywood glam style keep us endlessly intrigued, what will she think of next? Wearstler has said there is no design project she has done twice, once she finishes something she immediately moves on to the next thing and never repeats. Count this as a reason why there is endless inspiration on her Instagram feed as she shares her home décor, fashion and jewelry projects all in once place, as well as a love for healthy living and Barrys Bootcamp. A girl after our own heart. Sigh.
10. @mindykaling, photo credit: Mindy Kaling
Two words: one liners. Mindy has an endless supply of them. Some of our favorite funny Instagram accounts are too inappropriate to list here but Mindy keeps it clean while still cracking us up. We couldnt agree more with Steve Carell when asked about his former Office co-star, Carell told EW, Mindy is exceptionally smart, but is not afraid to talk about nail polish. And yet, her love of nail polish does not take away from her smartness. In a perfect world, she would take my SATs for me, and then we would go to the mall together.
