So you think you’re a foodie, huh? I certainty did for a minute while in New York for our recent editor’s event. We dined at some really amazing places and covered them in this Welcome Distractions: Friday Five. Perhaps I overdid it because after a few days of extremely satisfying meals I wasn’t feeling so hot. With perfect timing, Melissa Hemsley (you know, from the best-selling cookbook The Art of Eating Well) reached out to share her admiration of Tata’s Restorative Eye Cream in a Lucky press feature (shown below) so, naturally, I had to ask, “What’s a good recipe to get one feeling vibrant this Spring?”
Jasmine and Melissa are UK based sisters who believe that changing the way you eat doesnt have to involve diet and deprivation or be complicated. This is why we like them. Their The Art of Eating Well is a celebration of nutritious food that should be enjoyed everyday, like Chia Chai Butternut Breakfast Pudding and Chicken Tamarind Salad! She sent over this recipe for a sweet and creamy Love Smoothie she created with her co-author, fellow foodie and sister, Jasmine. I highly recommend it as your new go-to morning smoothie.
“Our Love Smoothie isnt just a pretty drink – the vibrant colour is an indicator of just how good it is for you. The red pigments, high in vitamin C, are a result of master detoxifier, beetroot. We blend beetroot with avocado to make it creamy, while whole oranges provide the zippy zing to cut through the earthy taste of beetroots. A dash of vanilla extract adds a unique flavour and aroma.
We call it a love smoothie because of beetroots aphrodisiac properties (its been known as natures Viagra since Roman times!). The mineral boron plays a significant role in the production of our sex hormones, tryptophan (the precursor to serotonin and melatonin), helps to create a sense of wellbeing and the B vitamin, choline, contributes to a relaxed state of mind and improves blood flow. Avocado makes this smoothie all the more filling thanks to a healthy dose of hormone-balancing natural fats. The antioxidants in oranges fight free radicals and the flavonoids and polyphenols in this zesty fruit can help to fight viral infections; overall benefiting your skin to give you a healthy, glowing complexion from the inside out. So there you have it, this smoothie as well as having all the antioxidant power and nutrients we need for fantastic skin, can very well get you in the mood for romance!
Our bestselling cookbook The Art Of Eating Well includes an entire chapter dedicated to smoothies and juices. Some of our all-time favourites include a Strawberry Mint and Cucumber concoction which is perfectly refreshing on balmy summer days and our Go-To Green Smoothie, the ideal pick-me-up your body needs for a hit of nutrition and hydration. Chop, blend, slurp!”
use organic ingredients where possible
1 medium-ripe avocado
1 small/medium beetroot
3 medium-sized oranges
Optional: 1 tablespoon of raw honey – depending on the sweetness of the oranges (and your tooth!)
Seeds from half a vanilla pod or 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (we like Nielsen Massey)
250ml filtered water
Scrub the beetroot and slice into quarters, or grate if you don’t have a high-powered blender.
Peel the oranges, halve crossways and remove any pips.
Halve the avocado and scoop out the flesh.
Add the beetroots, blood orange flesh, avocado flesh, raw honey (if using), vanilla extract and water to the blender.
Pulse a few times and then blend until smooth.
