Katia Beauchamp is a beauty maven that we feel lucky to know: she founded Birchbox, the incredibly successful beauty subscription service that delivers a colorful box of curated beauty samples to your door each month. These boxes seem to have quite a bit in common with Katia herself: colorful, beautiful and surprising, but also whip-smart and poised to let you in on the secret of what’s the next big thing in beauty. We’ve had the honor of collaborating with Birchbox on a limited-edition gift box in the past, and on Birchbox blog posts where Tata swapped tips with Katia on going natural with your regimen.
Now, we’re swapping places, with an exclusive interview with Katia on motherhood, products, advice, mistakes, and more. Read on!
What’s your favorite part about working in the beauty industry?
The kind of people that you meet when you work in the industry. The thing that struck me when I was 19, when I had my first experience in the industry as an intern with Lauder in college, I realized the people I was meeting were super intelligent and analytical, but also incredibly creative, with a balance in their lives between the art and science of business. I thought that was so fantastic that you could have a job with that with analytics, creative, and at the end of the day, having an ability to make decisions based on a lot of perspective and knowledge.
Whats your number one beauty tip that gets you through a busy, hectic day?
I agree with something I heard Tata say once that blush can make all of the difference. It makes you look alive. I carry the Lip and Cheek tint and put it on throughout the day, like someone would put on lipstick. It makes me look happy and healthy!
Whats one thing thats changed about your beauty and self-care routine since becoming a mother?
Almost everything in my skin care routine switched to Tata Harper! I spend most of the time of my beauty routine in skincare the least amount of time on makeup, middle on hair, and the vast majority on skincare, so Im picky. I have really high standards, and Ive always been someone that believes in layering your moisturizers in a pretty serious way so its really been the brands and products themselves that have switched since becoming a mom, not really the categories. Also, Ive never really been one to wash my hair often, so thats helped me a lot as a mom. Overall, I dont do anything too elaborate even before I was a mom, I just didnt have time.
Whats one thing about your beauty routine that hasnt changed?
One thing Ive done consistently for my whole beauty life has been putting eyeliner on the bottom of my eyes. Everything else has changed pretty habitually.
If you could pass along one thing that youve learned in your career to ambitious young women everywhere, what would it be?
I believe a lot in being bold, and asking for the things that you need what I do and what Ive done for a long time is try to get partners be excited about something. One realization I had pretty early on is that I dont believe in hearing no. Particularly, I dont accept a no until I really hear it from the right person the person I need to say yes. The joke on my team used to be no means yes!
Can you tell us about a mistake you made at some point in life, and what you learned from it? This could be anything from a disastrous experimental haircut to a career choice.
My husband is someone that Ive known since I was ten years old. We found each other at the right time in terms of being romantically involved, but it took too long for us to get together. We got together when we were 24. If I could have told my thirteen-year-old self that this was going to be my husband, I feel like I would have been a different person then.
Whats one thing youve felt inspired by recently?
I get so much inspiration from our team, and watching people develop into such impressive business people who have honed their craft and are stepping up in a new way in terms of being a leader and being strategic. I get so emotional and excited about seeing that happen at Birchbox our leaders are what inspires me, and what makes me want to work as hard as I can.
What’s something you’ve done that you can’t wait to tell your grandchildren about?
That I founded Birchbox!
Its a Sunday night and you have a really big week coming up. Whats one thing you do to enjoy your last weekend hours of freedom, or to prep yourself for the days ahead?
Sunday night, I really do try to cook dinner cooking is cathartic for me, it makes me feel more balanced and calm. I dont get to do a lot of cooking during the week, so thats something I try to squeeze in to my weekend.
Whats your favorite Tata Harper product, and why?
The Resurfacing Mask, because it does everything it makes a visible difference immediately. I use it once a week. I love the way it makes my skin look.
