Have you noticed these adorable new TOMS classics bouncing around your Pinterest feed yet? That charming rhino print isn’t meaningless; it was created in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund to support conservation efforts that protect rhinos, which are becoming increasingly endangered in parts of Asia. The heart and mind behind this initiative are those of Heather Mycoskie, who we’re honored to share an exclusive interview with below. Heather is TOMS’ Chief Animal Lover, and she has quite a full plate behind that quirky title.
Heather and her husband Blake (TOMS’ founder) recently welcomed a little boy Summit into their family, who is completely adorable; you only need to visit her Instagram feed to fall in love. Here, the globe-trotting mom shares some insight into her recently changed world, which sounds as exciting and fulfilling as ever.
Were curious about your world…tell us about your current state of mind.
Our world has always been about traveling. It still is. But now having Summit changes things up.
I am currently packing and getting our family ready to go on our first huge international trip with Summit. We are going to be with Blake while visits Europe for his TOMS press tour in Berlin, London + Ireland. We will be gone for about 3 weeks, and so I have been working on what I need to do in order to get Summits sleep + feeding schedule changed to the new time-zones, and making sure we pack all the right things.
What is one trait you love about yourself that your children have brought out in you?
I am a very intuitive person, but sometimes my intuition can get mixed up in a lot of stuff and I cannot feel it clearly. I know the only way to have clarity is to work on myself. Having Summit has created this new drive and dedication inside of me to work on myself, to be my best self so that I can be lead by my intuition, and be the best mother that he needs me to be.
Who is your beauty muse?
Charlize Theron. She has the most radiant skin which inspires me to really keep up my beauty routine. We just had dinner with her the other night and the more time we get to spend with her the more amazed I am by her beauty inside and out. She’s a smart, powerful woman, and a great mom.
With regard to motherhood, whats one thing that nobody talks about that you think is worthy of conversation?
Post-pardum, I experienced it, and it was a really tough battle to defeat. It felt like I had a fuse that would blow like a light, and without any warning. It is lightly talked about. There also seems to be this lack of a proper understanding of what it means and all the different realms that a mother can experience, and it seems that most women who go through it are ashamed of sharing their experiences truthfully with other women. There is little to no preparation for soon to be moms and their spouses, partners, and the rest of their family, other than the basic text book conversations with our doctors. Through my experience, I was able to open up and connect with friends + family members about what was going on for me. This is where I learned that it is normal, that about the majority of these mothers I spoke with have had post-pardum in some form or another, and the thing is each experience is totally different. This gave me and my husband hope that I could get through it, and gratefully I have come out of the clouds.
Whats one thing that really made a difference in terms of your ability to continue working or maintaining your career while starting a family, for better or for worse?
My husband and I decided well before we were pregnant that we wanted to create a village of our own to help raise our children taking the I have to do it all, and all alone mentality off my shoulders and out of my heart.
We have learned from traveling the world and seeing in villages that it does take a village to raise a baby. Everyone plays their part in helping out so that the mom can do whatever it is she needs to do. We have been blessed to have Blakes parents live so close by. They have already had their fill of sleepovers with Summit, and we have been blessed to have a night baby nurse and have a daytime nanny. It gives me the peace of mind that Summit is in the safest hands so that I can leave the house for meetings, sit in my office and work, have lunch with a girlfriend, volunteer, meditate, and to get my body back to my pre-pregnancy shape. By being able to have our village it gives me the confidence to continue my work, and makes me a more stronger and connected mother + wife.
What are some beauty staples that you keep in your purse?
I always have tissues, dental floss, hand lotion with SPF, face sunscreen and lip-treatments Be True + Be Adored.
Has your philosophy on beauty changed now that youre a mom? If it has, how so?
I became conscientious about the products I use on my skin + hair when I was 18. It has been something I have been extremely committed to, making sure that I am not harming my body using products that are filled with bad chemicals. Now that I have become a mom and I am in my 30s, the type of products I have been using have been elevated and are geared towards anti-aging.
Which bedtime story do you most admire?
Our favorite book to read to Summit at the moment is Deepak Chopras On my way to a Happy Life. It resonates with how Blake and I want to raise our children, and guide them on the path that was created for them.
What is your idea of a perfect weekday morning?
Wake up in our home in Topanga. Blake and I get Summit and our dogs up together at 7am. While I am feeding Summit, Blake makes coffee and after Summits feeding we all sit on the floor in the nursery including Buddha and Gypsy and just love on Summit. Being together as a family in the morning, when Blake doesnt have to rush out the door, is truly such a special gift and creates a moment we cherish.
A personal trick you’ve learned that helps you lead the life you love
To have love, compassion and grace towards myself. Only when I am operating this way is when I can truly work on myself and feel connected to not just my spirit, but also Blake, my family, friends and the rest of the world.
Were so happy that you use Tata Harper Skincare – tell us about the products that you cant live without.
Elixir Vitae, Restorative Eye-Cream, Moisturizing Mask for nighttime, the Aromatic Bedtime Treatment (this was my savior during the first few weeks after having Summit when I was only able to get 1-3 hour sleep sessions and needed to fall immediately asleep. It was seriously magic!)
