Another year has come and gone – it’s hard to believe that my oldest cub, Hunter, is already six years old! Grace and Tata Mia are 4 and 3, and are quite the pair, and are becoming best friends. What a busy year it’s been, full of fun family adventures – we’ve been everywhere from Colombia (to visit my family and all of the kids’ cousins) to New York City (to see the Rangers play, of course) this year. I’m excited to share some of my favorite snapshots from the year with you, taken everywhere from weddings to beaches to our Vermont backyard fields.
Were curious about your world…tell us about your current state of mind.
My state of mind is pretty bright and clear – I’m happy that the seasons are changing and that winter is finally over, and I just generally feel stable and optimistic right now.
What is one trait you love about yourself that your children have brought out in you?
Definitely my fondness for arts and crafts! I’ve always loved doing creative projects, and now being able to do them with my kids is so much fun, and so fulfilling.
Who is your beauty muse?
Brigitte Bardot I love her unapologetic beauty.
With regard to motherhood, whats one thing that nobody talks about that you think is worthy of conversation?
One thing that I noticed is that when you’re pregnant, everyone is full of questions and concern for you, wanting to know how you are, how you’re feeling, if you need anything. But then, as soon as the baby is actually born, the amount of attention and help you get definitely decreases, which is funny because it’s after the baby comes that you really need the support!
Another thing that I think isn’t talked about that much is how important it is for moms to take care of themselves, especially when you have a few children in quick succession like I did. It’s important to carry on with all of the things you love to do, that make you happy and feel balanced, whether that’s hobbies or exercise or friendships. It’s an adventure to figure out how to incorporate the kids into those things, but to me, it’s been so key to not completely abandon those elements of life before children.
Whats one thing that really made a difference in terms of your ability to continue working or maintaining your career while starting a family, for better or for worse?
Having good, trustworthy help with the children, everyone from neighbors to nannies to extended family.
What are some beauty staples that you keep in your purse?
Has your philosophy on beauty changed now that youre a mom? If it has, how so?
I’m happy to report that it hasn’t changed at all! My skincare routine is exactly the same as it was before I had children – it’s natural and nontoxic of course, which was a change I made quite a few years before I first became pregnant, and it’s a complete regimen with every step from cleansing to eye cream. Skincare has been a priority of mine for as long as I can remember, so I made sure to keep it up even through all of the craziness of having newborns in the house.
Which bedtime story do you most admire?
I don’t know if this is one that I particularly admire, but my kids cannot get enough of the Three Little Pigs story. It’s a nightly staple.
Which superpower would you most like to have now that youre a mom?
Being able to be in multiple places at once. Then, I could watch my son play hockey and go to ballet class with my girls at the same time!
What is your mom/mum/mommy motto?
Don’t sweat the small stuff.
Favorite family meal to share?
Buttermilk pancakes with chocolate chips and bacon on the side are a Saturday morning favorite in my house, and are super quick and easy to make. The kids love to help mix the batter and flip the pancakes on the stove.
What is your idea of a perfect weekday morning?
It starts off with enough time for me to have a 20-minute meditation session. After that, the whole day is off to a much better start than without! I’ll have a shower, get ready for the day, get the kids up, and we have leisurely breakfast together. Then, they head off to school and I have a few more minutes to myself before I drive over to the office.
A personal trick you’ve learned that helps you lead the life you love
Transcendental Meditation has been really helpful for me lately. I’ve been learning it for a while now, and it helps me reset the clutter in my mind and start the day feeling fresh and balanced.
