Cricket’s Circle is a site we know and love as a go-to resource for new mothers who just want somewhere simple and straightforward to look for recommendations for what on earth to get to outfit life as a new mother with a new little one. It’s thoughtfully curated, easy to organize, and easy to connect with trusted friends (and celebrities) who weigh in with favorites and recommendations.
It was founded by Rachel Blumenthal, who also founded the stunning, high-end jewelry line Rachel Leigh. After her adventure in jewelry, Rachel pitched in to support Warby Parker, the glasses company that you’ve probably heard of that was co-founded by her husband Neil. Rachel was sweet enough to take some time to answer some questions we had for her for Mother’s Day; we thought she’d be perfect as she spends so much of her time talking to and thinking about motherhood – and crafting Cricket’s Circle around it!
What’s a moment from motherhood you’ll never forget?
Aside from the obvious (the first time I held him, first words, first steps, the first day of school, all birthdays), I distinctly remember the feeling of my first Mothers Day. I was standing, holding Griffin, waiting for my husband Neil to pick up bagels. Literally everyone that passed by wished me a Happy Mothers Day – practically treating me like a celebrity. It was in that moment that I not only realized how important being a mother was but how much people respected mothers.
What keeps you feeling beautiful? (Interpret this any way you like!)
I love dressing up – feathers, sequins, dresses, heels! To me, there’s nothing more fun than putting on an over-the-top outfit. On the flip side, my husband always says I look my prettiest in a white t-shirt.
How do you treat yourself?
I go to Adele Reising for acupuncture once a week and hot yoga twice a week which both encourage relaxation (it’s pathetic that I have to schedule that!). Regular manicures and pedicures keep me feeling polished (no pun intended) and Net-a-Porter’s What’s New For You morning email is always a tease. I’ve also gone through so many phases of eating habits over the years but I’m now at a place where if I want something, I eat it (and enjoy it) in moderation.
What’s your favorite Tata Harper product and why?
I love the Be Adored tinted lip treatment. It’s super light, both in texture and color, plus it’s safe! There’s nothing worse than putting on lipstick and having colored residue around the edges of your lips 30 minutes later, or worse, color on your teeth – that’s never going to happen with this tint. When I was pregnant, I finally started giving consideration to the ingredients in the products I was putting on my body and many lipsticks contain aluminum which is really bad for you (and your baby) – Tata’s lip tint doesn’t, which is such a relief knowing you don’t have to sacrifice looks for health.
What’s your favorite way to disconnect and spend time with your family?
Ive been making more of an effort to arrange my schedule around Griffins so that even on the busiest of days, we can fit in some special time – just the two of us. Dinner and bath time are always a struggle so I come home at least two nights per week after hes done both and we go on an adventure. He decides where we are going and how we are going to get there (he always chooses the bus or the choo choo, aka the subway). Our last adventure involved taking the bus uptown, searching for ice cream sandwiches, and eating them on the way home, back on the bus. Any activity where he takes the lead and were not limited by scheduling is always the most fun and carefree.
Can you share a discovery that has led to finding more balance in your life?
Id be lying if I said I had a work/life balance. Because Im an entrepreneur, my personal and professional lives are almost entirely intertwined. While I of course have friends that have nothing to do with my business, Ive also had the opportunity and great fortune to meet so many inspiring and interesting friends through my business. They dont feel like work friends because we have so many similar interests and truly enjoy spending time together regardless of work.
I have a few lifehacks that help when it comes to getting back time. The more I can find solutions to help maximize every minute, the better. Aside from our nanny, my husband and my mother-in-law, I rely on apps and online services. FreshDirect, Diapers.com and Postmates apps for life at home everything I need, from groceries to diapers can be delivered straight to my door. Im newly obsessed with eBay now. For work, Twitter aggregates my news and an app called CardMunch keeps all business cards and contacts organized and linked to LinkedIn.
The best piece of advice you ever received…and the worst?
Best: Try to avoid multi-tasking. I must admit I’m an A+ multi-tasker, however I find when I can focus on Griffin and nothing else, I’m more relaxed and I enjoy my time with him so much more and he’s the most engaged. I try to devote that full hour or two hours in the morning or before bed to him and nothing else (sometimes I’ll sneak an Instagram of him in there) and then it’s 100% work or husband time.
Worst advice: Treasure every moment. As much as the sentiment sounds lovely, it’s a little hard to repeat when you’re up changing diapers at 1:00AM, 3:00AM and 5:30AM. You definitely won’t forget those moments — you’ll learn from them and be proud that you made it through — but perhaps “treasure” isn’t exactly the right word.
