Were not about to pretend that face oils are the next big thing. Theyve been used for centuries for beautification; in fact, some records show that oils were so essential for moisture and protection, (especially as protection from the dry heat in Ancient Egypt) that oil was one of the basic commodities in which wages were paid to workers. Imagine getting paid in Tata Harper Revitalizing Body Oil! (Actually, you might have been able to convince me when I was a customer not long before coming to work on the farm. I was that BIG of a fan, and loved the Body Oil as a little luxury… still do!) For the Egyptians, it was about beauty but also necessity to protect from scorching, dry heat and sand. No other culture has been so influenced by beautification as the Egyptians – they even believed that makeup had magical, healing powers. OK, I know were talking about oils but I just had to throw that in there. Fascinating! (I kind of do too.)
Back to face oil. They used oils for the same reasons we do centuries laterto moisturize and fight wrinkles, specifically with moringa, castor and sesame seed oils. I was also delighted to find out that they made macerations, because we do as well in our Open Lab. I never knew what this was until I joined Tata Harper. Who knew it was a process that dated back to 3150 BC? A maceration is a mixture of flowers, herbs and fruits added to heated oils at high temperatures. It smells divine and it may very well have magical, healing powers too because when added to products like our Revitalizing Body Oil and new Beautifying Face Oil, I have witnessed truly transformative results on my own skin. Just when you thought you knew everything about oils you learn something new. Thats a little 101 for you.
What else is there to know? Apparently a lot, because as popular as these powerfully, pure formulations are, we still get a lot of questions from customers, family and friends so we decided to tackle the ones most frequently asked here on Angel Road.

1. Are face oils best for a certain skin type?
Face Oils are great for nearly every skin type. Really.
We have found that people who are most hesitant to use a face oil are those with oily skin. Seems only natural to worry but face oil can actually help control excess oil production by depositing rich plant oils into the skin so your skin doesnt have to overcompensate.
Those with super dry skin can benefit from adding a face oil to their routine without eliminating the moisturizer step. Yes, you read that right, moisturizer AND oil. Youll see a dramatic difference in your skin with an evening application if you apply the oil after the serum followed by a liberal application of moisturizer to lock in the hydration. Wake up like this– with dewy, supple, gorgeous skin.
If you have sensitive skin, youre most likely experiencing inflammation in some form, whether its redness, itchiness, rashes or breakouts. Face oils contain EFAs, essential fatty acids, and not only keep your skin hydrated but also protect it from the damaging effects of environmental damage which can lead to even more inflammation. Plant-based oils like ours are non-comedogenic so they wont clog pores and cause breakouts. Still, we think its best that to be cautious and seek out holistic advice for treating acne, and then consider bringing it into their routine.
Women and men with combination skin are generally compatible with almost any product we make- lucky! I have combination skin myself and because I try nearly every sample that comes out of the Open Lab, I can share firsthand the results you might see. The biggest difference I am seeing is an inner glow in my skin; that’s because one’s complexion looks more radiant when it’s smooth enough to reflect light. When used in conjunction with our Nourishing Oil Cleanser (+ lots of lemon water throughout the day), my skin looks as healthy and full as it did when I was actually, wait, it has never looked this great. I love these new products!
2. Does this mean I have to say goodbye to my favorite moisturizer?
Not at all! Unless your moisturizer contains synthetic chemicals. In which case, its probably best that you two part ways. It all depends on your preference – some people prefer lotions textures and some like oils. I think if youre considering mixing it up, its important to consider the finish you want your skin to have during the day.
Matte finish? Use the Rebuilding Moisturizer to hydrate in the morning and try the face oil as an intense hydration treatment at night. It will also help impart a healthy glow for when you wake the next day.
Glowy finish? Use a small amount of the Beautifying Face Oil in the morning. Apply to the skin right after you shower and give yourself some time before your makeup application so the oil can set in. You can also use this as an intense hydration at night. Another tip is to pat in a ½ drop of oil to the skin over makeup when it starts to dry and crack in the early evening hours to keep the skin looking like skin.
3. When should I use my face oil?
Our face oil was created and tested to be used with both morning and evening applications. Something I have learned about the routines of women is that the time we spend on our skin in the morning is definitely less than how much we give ourselves before bed and for good reason! Women today are answering work emails, getting children ready for school, walking the dog sometimes all before 8AM. How do you do it? A morning application of face oil can change the way your skin looks throughout the entire day. It makes the skin look plump and juicy and instantly gives it a lit-from-within glow. I understand if you’re hesitant to add one more thing to your morning routine, but this one is worth trying because you get the hydration you want AND glow.
A liberal application of our oil overnight is a great moisture treatment and its especially needed during these colder months that are coming up.
4. How much oil do I need for an application?
If youre using our Beautifying Face Oil, we recommend 2-3 for an allover application. 4 would be the max amount that anyone would ever need. Our recyclable glass bottle features a simple (and elegant) dropper so you can carefully dispense that amount without having any go to waste. The dropper will hold up to 10-15 drops so if you are choosing to use on the neck and décolleté, youll use about half of the droppers fill.
5. What separates a quality face oil from a bottle of jojoba from the grocery store?
Great question, Alissa! She is my best friend and asked after I let her try my PR sample. It has since gone missing… (hmmm). I have used straight jojoba and coconut oil in the past to hydrate my skin too and it did just that. Im happy to see so many of my girlfriends tossing their synthetic-laden white bottles in favor of glass jars from the grocery store that cost far less. Im biased, but its exciting to see the shift taking place. I think that the biggest advantages high-performance face oils offer are age-defying benefits and the radiance factor. They go above and beyond surface hydration and reduce the appearance of dullness and fatigue for a toned, radiant look. Ours does this with Brown Algae Extract. It also has Camellia flower infused to moisturize with essential fatty acids and a blend of botanical infusions that were grown on the Harper farm. Last but not least, the amazing scent. Like all Tata Harper products, this one does not disappoint!
