Here is a list of things we love: ingenuitive, hardworking mothers, the season’s latest wearable and affordable fashions, and the exciting activity and people of New York Fashion Week. Now how about an event that combined all three, with the goal of celebrating fashionable moms who are all working to change the world with mission-driven businesses! On Monday night we had the awesome opportunity to participate in such a dream event: Strut: the Fashionable Moms Show, celebrating Moms on a Mission!
Co-founded by Denise Albert and Melissa Gerstein of the multi-platform brand The MOMs, and Stephanie Winston Wolkoff of SWW Creative, the event featured moms of all ages, sizes and walks of life who strutted their stuff on the runway in the season’s latest wearable fashions that are available in stores now. We got to spend time with the inspiring team of moms backstage and give everybody Aromatherapy Treatments (Sress and Irritability) to calm their jittery nerves before walking out onstage.
Backstage, we got a chance to chat with Stephanie Winston Wolkoff who has been a center figure in the fashion world for two decades and is currently the President and CEO of SWW Creative, an agency that provides collaborations in the worlds of fashion, entertainment and beauty. Here’s what she had to say!
THS: What was the inspiration behind this event?
SWW: The inspiration behind Strut: the Fashionable Moms show was really a collaborative effort between two moms on a mission. When the moms Stacy and Melissa came to me about doing some sort of fashion initiative, having been in this glamourous, incredibly enticing world of fashion for almost two decades, the thought of doing a consumer show was the ultimate balance between motherhood and working within this realm of fashion. To create a show that was consumer-based but also that focused on what’s in stores now was the most important thing to me and to everybody- that initiative to make people interested, to get it out there, to celebrate what fashion is all about. What made it different from everything else that’s on the runway today is that its real moms walking the runway, but it’s also fashion that’s in stores and available right away. And then to bring in Rent the Runway – they’re incredible, just to be able to think of a different way to engage a retailer was to bring exposure to a brand that isn’t really that engaged yet in the industry, and this is a wonderful way to bring so many brands out that are still trying to figure out where they work in the industry. This is a perfect runway balance of getting everyone out there.
THS: Who are the moms that are here today? From all over the place?
SWW: From all over! We have moms from the military, we have moms that are social bloggers, we have entrepreneurial moms and we have moms that are in fashion. And my favorite, I have to say, is one of my best friends David Kirsch who has two daughters, Emilia and Francesa. He’s a celebrity trainer, and David is here as a mother, a father, and someone who works non-stop, and to me this represented the true understanding of what a Mom on a Mission and that was my Aha! moment today.
THS:How do you maintain calm in all this crazy hecticness?
SWW: You know, I have no calm! Actually, I think the best way for me to maintain calm is through my children – they ground me. It’s about drop-off, going to a show, and pick-up, and going to another production, and going to different meetings and doing interviews – my children really do bring me back to reality every second and even when they’re not with me, they’re constantly either calling me or in my mind, and honestly I didn’t become a mother not to be with them, so to find that happy balance is my greatest strength but also my greatest struggle every day. So this is really a wonderful way to bring them into my world, and have them walk the runway with me tonight, and to be a part of what this world’s about and why mom does this – to really help other people.
We’re thrilled to have been able to participate (Tata was invited to be one of the runway Moms strutting her stuff as a hardworking, entrepreneurial mother, but had a West coast trip planned and wasn’t able to make it!) and are so inspired by all of the smart, passionate, enthusiastic women we met backstage and watched strut down the runway! The list of moms included some friends like Latham Thomas of Mama Glow and Melanie Fascitelli of Clo-sette, as well as Karen Klopp of What2WearWhere, Jenny Fleiss of Rent The Runway, and actress Lisa Rinna.
Another element to the show that made it so special was the fact that these moms brought their children out on the runway with them – fashionable little kids following in their moms’ footsteps! Their excitement added a lot to the positive energy of the show and definitely highlighted the ways in which this show was special and unique compared to other more traditional fashion shows. We had a ball and were so glad to be part of an event focused on hardworking moms working hard to stay fashionable despite their demanding schedules – and succeeding at it!
To all busy moms out there: What are your go-to everyday fashion staples? If you were to strut your stuff down the runway, what would you want to be wearing? We’re curious!
