Here in Vermont, spring can feel so short – it seems as though the freezing weather and gray days (which often drag on through April) skip straight into June heat and sunshine, giving us just a few weeks of actual spring weather, most of which are spent bemoaning all of the mud. But during those brief days, where the temperature hops between chilly in the shade and brilliantly warm in the sunshine, I love to spend some time switching my beauty, home and health routines out of winter-mode, which involves swapping moisture-heavy skincare for lighter products, and filling my house with purifying, energizing scents and essences to kick-start the whole family.
Here are 10 of my spring skincare must-haves and go-to techniques, which include some items that don’t belong on your vanity, but still contribute to holistic health and happiness!
1: Double Cleansing with my two current go-to cleansers: the Purifying Cleanser and the Nourishing Cleanser. Double cleansing is a technique that results in softer skin, smaller pores, and of course a cleaner complexion, which is so important for combatting the aging effects of pollution and environmental exposure. Your preference for the product pair may vary, but I love these two, and have been using them together every evening to get my skin back to square one.
2: Raw Honey Masks as a Saturday morning treat. I’ve been using raw honey as a skincare treatment for as long as I can remember – my mother and grandmother used to use it and I learned from them. It’s so incredible for the skin! It’s healing, nourishing, and it’s a humectant, so it moisturizes. Oh, and we’ve been playing around with it in our Vermont lab recently… stay tuned for something involving raw honey coming out this summer!
3: Elixir Vitae and Hydrating Floral Essence; I’ve been loving this combination in this (slightly) warmer weather. I put a few sprays of the floral toner in my hand, and cocktail it with my Elixir Vitae – it helps the serum penetrate, for better results. Plus, it just smells like a spring garden, and gets me in a glass-half-full kind of mood.
4: Beautifying Face Oil for lightweight moisture. My skin is on the drier side, but usually, the combination of the Hydrating Floral + a serum + this Beautifying Face Oil is just right for a weightless dose of hydration. I love the idea that this oil contains Brown Algae Extract which gives your cells a boost of youthful energy, which is just what I feel like my skin needs when it’s coming out of a long winter.
5: Pursoma Baths are my new favorite week-night treat, especially right on the cusp of a new season. They’re not your average bath salts; they contain powerful detoxifying clays and algaes that leave you feeling totally restored and very, very clean. I love their Hot Tub Bath for any time I feel a cold coming on, and their Resurrection Bath for any time I need to check back in with myself.
6: For some color, I love blending Very Charming Lip and Cheek Tint with Very Sweet Lip and Cheek Tint. One’s petal-pink, the other is shimmery peach; together, they create the perfect spring shade. Some women never leave the house without lipstick or mascara; I never leave the house without blush, and this is my go-to combination this season.
7: Purifying and energizing essential oils have become a staple in my office and my home, thanks to really informative books like this one that have changed the way I see flower essences. In the spring, I love to use oils like Frankincense, Grapefruit and Peppermint, which can really help revitalize a space.
8: Homemade herbal tea always helps me settle into a new time of year; by switching up the herbs I use seasonally, I can really feel the results of a few mugs of tea each day. The blend I’m enjoying right now is stress-relieving and revitalizing, and includes Skullcap, Peppermint, Oatstraw, Ginseng, and Ashwaghanda, also known as Winter Cherry.
9: Red nail polish is my new indulgence – I never used to be much of a nail polish fan, but now I’m addicted to cherry red. I love RGB nail polish because it’s 5-free but delivers great color. This shade is called “Too Red” and it really is too good.
10: I’m a big fan of incense; I love to burn some every weekend to create good energy and happy vibes for the new week. The start of a new season calls for burning sage, but day to day I use a brand called Juniper Ridge, which creates amazing incense. Burn some on a weekday morning and use the aroma to set an intention for the day, or, burn it at night to help wind down the energy in your home.
So, there you have it! Ten items I keep close at hand for Spring.
