People with a sensitive skin-type can feel like they are in a never-ending battle with their skin, dealing with symptoms such as itchiness, extreme dryness, stinging and redness, and they often come to Tata searching for solutions. Sensitive skin is very common but can easily be dealt with and greatly alleviated with the right kind of daily care. Below is a guide to the best natural skincare regimen for sensitive skin types – but first, let’s take a closer look at what causes sensitivity, and what might help.
First, it’s important to discern between a skin type and a skin condition: sensitive skin is a type, classified as skin that’s easily irritated or inflamed, but it’s not a skin condition. It can, however, be caused by medical skin conditions, such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis or allergic contact dermatitis. If you were to visit the dermatologist, they might stick to the books and declare that your skin technically isn’t “sensitive” unless it’s very, very dry (which exposes the nerve endings and blood vessels under the epidermis), or has a tendency to turn flushed and red easily, or if actual skin reactions are caused by anything from exposure to the environment to particular products (those reactions being either bumps, spots or other inflammations) – or, all three. Simply having an uncomfortable reaction to a product doesn’t technically (according to Web MD) qualify you as having sensitive skin. That said, we all know that it feels sensitive when your skin disagrees with new products that it tries, so in our definition we’ll include that as well.
What is sensitive skin, technically? It’s basically a simple situation in which the skin’s outermost and protective layer, the epidermis, is compromised. That means that irritants easily get into our skin to cause problems; it also means that the skin’s ability to maintain moisture is limited, causing dehydration.
What causes skin sensitivity? So many things. It can be almost impossible to narrow down. A few common causes: allergic reactions to harsh ingredients, chemicals or fragrances in common products, allergic reactions to food, hormonal imbalances, stress levels, genetics, or even medications. The list is long, but there is a fairly straightforward list of things you can do to reduce the symptoms, starting with:
- Avoid products with detergents or alcohols, both of which are too strong and compromise the skin’s protective barrier.
- Moisturize properly, which is key, to both protect the skin and replenish lost moisture.
- Avoid intense ingredients like acids, retinols and alcohols.
- Avoid rough scrubs and exfoliants, which further degrade the barrier.
- Avoid products with synthetic fragrance!
- Essentially, aim for mild, healing, gentle products.
Let’s discuss the reasons that Tata Harper Skincare products in particular can be great for sensitive skin. First, none contain harsh chemicals (our formulas have zero synthetic chemicals at all, in fact), or detergents, or alcohol. All products are oriented towards delivering high-quality, replenishing moisture – none are dehydrating. None contain synthetic fragrances. All contain high concentrations of healing natural ingredients that nourish skin with vitamins, minerals, nutrients and antioxidants – exactly what it needs to get back on track.
And now, the regimen!
Step 1: Remove makeup. People with sensitive skin types in particular should be careful to properly remove all traces of makeup at the end of each day; any buildup or residue can cause irritation when left overnight. Use our Nourishing Oil Cleanser on a damp cotton round to remove makeup, or, pump a few pumps into your palms and massage over the skin. Splash with a bit of water to form a light milk, and then rinse thoroughly. The Nourishing Oil Cleanser’s formula is gentle, hydrating and packed with balancing, moisturizing ingredients like Camellia Flower and Argan Oil.
Step 2: Cleanse. Our Refreshing Cleanser was the first formula in the line formulated specifically for sensitive skin, and it is a game-changer. It cleanses with pink clay, essential oils and fruit enzymes from grapefruit and pomegranate. The enzymes gently remove dead skin and buildup through chemical exfoliation (versus physical) to keep skin fresh and decongested without irritating it. The light, natural scent fades quickly and skin is left feeling moisturized and balanced.
Step 3: Tone & Hydrate. Since moisture is so important for restoring the balance of sensitive skin, our Hydrating Floral Essence is an excellent item to have handy for daily use as it’s oil-free, lightweight and packed with Hyaluronic Acid, a moisturizing substance that our own skin produces (the production of which slows as we age), to help optimize skin’s moisture balance. Spritz the skin after cleansing to lightly hydrate, or keep it handy through the day to replenish when needed.
Step 4: No matter your skin type, an age-defying serum is key. The trick is finding one that cooperates with your sensitivity. Our Rejuvenating Serum‘s formula is, of course, synthetic-chemical free, and is filled with naturally hydrating ingredients that fight aging by supporting healthy, youthful skin and smoothing the appearance of wrinkles. Its lightweight, fast-absorbing formula sinks in right away, leaving the surface of the skin free and clear.
Step 5: Moisturize. For sensitive skin types, choosing a high-quality moisturizer that contains therapeutic ingredients is important, to promote and maintain a healthy barrier. Select one of our cream moisturizers to use daily: the Rebuilding Moisturizer (more lightweight) for a matte finish, or the Repairative Moisturizer (more rich) for a dewy finish. Both contain Hyaluronic Acid to replenish moisture, raw honey to nourish and reduce inflammation, and Safflower Oleosomes to continually draw moisture into the skin.
Step 6: Treat & Protect. For sensitive skin, the Replenishing Nutrient Complex is a life-saver, and I probably can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a lightweight oil serum, packed with herbal and floral extracts that heal, hydrate, nourish, soften, soothe and restore. It is a powerful balancing treatment for dryness, oiliness, irritation or even injured skin; Alfalfa helps oxygenate the skin while nourishing with vitamins A, B, C, D and E, while Jojoba hydrates and Arnica diminishes redness and inflammation. Choose either the large or small packaging, and massage a liberal amount of the oil lightly into the skin as the last step of your routine. Use it as a nightly treatment, too: apply heavily to the skin, massage lightly to absorb, and head to bed – you’ll wake up with skin that feels dramatically softer and more balanced.
We hope you explore some of the recommended solutions and products above. Remember, the three keys to reducing the symptoms of sensitivity are to replenish and protect the skin’s barrier, soothe and heal redness and inflammation, and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Best of luck. Any questions? Please leave them in the comments below!
