Last week, we asked our Facebook community to pitch in with some questions they had for Tata – on any topic under the sun. Tata’s passionate about skin, beauty, health and a lifestyle full of energy and productivity, and she loves to share what she knows and believes in.
Below are ten questions randomly selected from those submitted – and Tata’s answers! Thanks to everyone who pitched in a Q!
1. “I have awful eczema on my face plus acne. So I can’t use salicylic acid for my acne because it will hurt my eczema. The doctor hasn’t done any good. And I have red marks from my acne…I use tea tree and that’s about all right now. What do you recommend?” – Aubree
It sounds like you are experiencing very combination skin with some imbalances in moisture and oil production – first, take a look at the cleanser you’re using to ensure it doesn’t contain soaps or detergents or foaming agents, as those strip skin of its natural moisture barrier and all of its natural oils, which in turn makes your skin go into oil over-production. Switch to a non-soap cleanser like our Refreshing Cleanser, which is specially formulated for sensitive skin, and it won’t irritate your eczema with physical exfoliants. I would stop using tea tree oil because it’s an especially drying essential oil; while it has great cleansing and antiseptic properties, it can cause your skin to get flaky and parched when you put it directly on your face.
I think you can try a couple of different things to help improve your skin’s health. For one, take my advice above and switch to a gentle cleanser like our Refreshing Cleanser, and be very gentle with it on your skin – though people with acne often want to scrub at it, don’t do anything to break the skin, since that’s how the unhealthy bacteria spreads. Use a matte-finish moisturizer that won’t clog your pores, and I really suggest using a light facial oil like our Replenishing Nutrient Complex – there are a lot of healthy options out there, but make sure the oils are high quality and that it’s natural. This will help chill out your oil overproduction, it will nourish and treat your eczema, and help reduce the appearance of blemish scarring. Then, do a treatment at least once a week to really exfoliate and cleanse the skin – like our Resurfacing Mask mixed with our Refreshing Cleanser and applied to the face for 15 – 20 minutes, to let the enzymes treat blemishes and reduce redness in the skin.
Lastly, to combat acne, take a look at the sugar content in your diet or to your stress levels – also, make sure to drink lots of water every day and possibly start taking some acne and eczema-fighting supplements like Evening Primrose Oil or Zinc (often acne is just a Zinc deficiency!) — Hope this helps! xo Tata
2. “Do any or your products have an SPF factor?” – Lisa
No, not yet – we didn’t want to release a sunscreen until we had given the R&D the time it really deserved. It’s challenging to make a totally natural and truly effective natural sunscreen, that’s why there aren’t a lot out there! We are making some great progress though and are looking to have an SPF product out soon. In the mean time, some of our products like our Rejuvenating Serum has an ingredient called Date Palm Extract that helps combat environmental damage caused by UV exposure; while it’s not sunscreen, it helps reduce free radical damage by increasing antioxidating activity in the skin when exposed to the sun. – Tata
3. “What do you do to recharge? What are your inspirations?” – Aesook
I love dancing! That’s one way I love to recharge. Otherwise, I like to take a little time for meditation, even if it’s just fifteen minutes a day – at least it’s something. I used to be terrible with meditation, but since I’ve found Deepak Chopra’s guided meditations, it’s been a lot easier. They help me a lot. For inspirations, definitely the mission of my business! We’re changing the beauty industry in a positive way, and we’re giving people a healthy option for health and beauty. Being part of this movement motivates me every day! xx Tata
4. “Are you thinking of expanding to the UK soon? I would definitely represent and spread the word! I truly love and believe in your products.x” – Rebecca
In fact, we do have a few stores in the UK! Right now Being Content in London carries our line and they offer our facial services, and SpaceNK carries our products all over the place. We’re definitely planning on expanding in the future, and we’ll let you know if we need any help!! Thank you! xx Tata
5. “What is the best regimen for skin that is under a lot of stress? Should I do the mask more often than once a week? I love your products! Are you going to start selling in more outlets soon?” – Anne
Hi Anne! It depends what kind of stress your skin is under… maybe it’s stressed because you’re stressed – or, it could be stressed from being exposed to a lot of pollution, or depleted from oxygen if you smoke, or maybe from wearing makeup a lot which can clog pores. Either way, getting it back to healthy would all be the same process – the idea is to decongest it and feed it with vitamins and nourishment, and make sure it is properly hydrated so it glows. Cleanse every day – wash off all makeup – and it’s best to use an exfoliating cleanser or a Clarisonic which can really remove all that dead skin that accumulates every day, that leads to dullness and breakouts. I would use our Resurfacing Mask twice a week maximum – another trick can be to use it once a week but to leave it on longer, to really give it a fresh start. We don’t necessarily recommend this, but some customers say they actually sleep with it in on their face, to wake up totally refreshed!
Lastly, use a good healthy moisturizer and a facial oil to give it vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Stressed skin looks depleted and unhappy. Otherwise – take a little bit of time each day to de-stress your whole mind and body (I personally use our Aromatic Stress Treatment all the time to stay grounded, focused and relaxed on hectic days), and your skin will glow! xo Tata
6. “It’s hard to find natural makeup that is healthy and beautiful on. What are alternatives that look as good as high end brands?” – Stefanie
My favorite natural makeup brands are RMS, Vapour Beauty and Ilia. Their products work beautifully with the skin and really help it glow with health. Josie Maran’s makeup is great too, and they make things that are hard to find in the natural beauty world, like mascara. And of course my Be Adored lip treatment is something I use for red lips and even sometimes as a cheek rouge for a dewy glow. xo Tata
7. “have you found being a latina woman in business to be challenging and how has it made your business different from other businesses? gracias.” – Clara
You know, I really haven’t found that to be a challenge, or a major factor that makes my business different. I think that may be because this country is full of businesses that have been founded by people who have immigrated here; the business community is such a melting pot. I feel like the elements of my personality that make my business different are just that – characteristics of mine that aren’t necessarily Latin, but that have definitely shaped the way my business is run. Thanks for your question! xx Tata
8. “Which resources do you suggest in starting a business? Which books, manufacturers, etc. did you use?” – Alyssa
Great question! I’m someone who strongly believes that no matter how much a book can teach you, exposure to the real world and real business experience is what teaches you how to start and run a company. It’s incomparable, the amount that you learn. To me, business is all about people. At first, it’s about finding people to work with you whose skills complement yours, so you create a complete team that knows how to approach challenges from all angles. And above all, it’s about having passion for what you do, determination, and patience! Go for it – xx Tata
9. “What is the best natural cure/prevention for hyper pigmentation and brown spots? I wear sunscreen and a hat daily and exfoliate but nothing seems to help, in fact it seems to get worse. I like to keep my skincare regime natural but I am tempted to use something strong! I appreciate any advice.” – Molly
This is a common concern, and there are definitely a lot of very intense and potentially toxic solutions that many people go for right away, like hydroquinone, a lightening ingredient that is actually banned in Europe, Australia and some Asian countries for health concerns. I would recommend taking a look at some detoxification methods, since very often dark spots are a result of a suppressed natural detoxification process in the body. We’ve all heard of liver spots forming as the body ages and the liver’s function slows down, but really this can happen at any age; the skin starts showing signs of organs that are a little too loaded with toxins. I recommend taking daily capsules of Milk Thistle, which has been used for literally centuries as a detox herb; diluted lemon juice also works when applied directly to the skin (of course both of these need to be practiced regularly for a while to produce long-term results, but they are proven to be effective).
It can be tempting to take drastic measures with synthetics – but better yet, wait a few months for our Concentrated Brightening Serum – we are coming out with a product just for your concern! This product is 100% natural, of course, and tackels a discolored complexion to both prevent and actively reduce unwanted spots. It’s going to come out in August!! xx Tata
10. “Definitely want to ask some of the same questions on here – what sunscreen does she recommend, and what would you recommend to banish breakouts?” – Abbey
For sunscreen, I love a line called Vive Sana, and also Soleil Organique. Both highly effective and totally nontoxic. And for breakouts, there’s a laundry list of actions to take that will definitely produce results if you stick to them! First, cleanse daily with a cleanser that doesn’t strip your moisture barrier, and that exfoliates away all dead skin. Second, always wash your face completely free of makeup before bed every night. Avoid processed sugar in your diet wherever you can – eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies to keep the detoxing functions of your organs up, and drink lots and lots of water – no sodas or sugary drinks. Dab tea tree oil on bad pimples to dry them out, and otherwise use a product like our Resurfacing Mask once a week to totally cleanse the skin, minimize pores, reduce redness and fight bacteria. Hope this helps ! xo T
